Lafayette School Council Meeting
February 5, 2020

  1. School Safety & Security: Lockdown, Shelter-in-Place, Fire Drills, and Evacuation: School safety continues to be Mr. Brady’s and Mr. Lambresa’s number one priority. The Lafayette School will practice a full evacuation later in the year and continue to practice fire drills.
  2. Student Opportunity Act: Mr. Brady has written a plan about how to spend the extra funding that will be allotted to the school system for the upcoming year. The focus will be on spending the funds on extra ELL and Special education support.
  3. School Improvement Plan: The School Improvement Plan was approved by the Everett School Committee. The leadership team will be meeting to review the plan, and add any suggestions they might have. The i-Ready data will be added to identify school-wide overarching strengths and weaknesses. Mr. Brady will be presenting the revised plan in March to the school committee.
  4. Restorative Justice: Mr. Lambresa presented to the school committee about restorative justice and the positive effects it brings to our schools and families. There will be a new plan implemented involving suspensions and how students are disciplined beginning next year.
  5. Kindness Week: Kindness Week was a huge success at the Lafayette school. The guidance councilors organized a different activity each day that children enjoyed participating in. Each activity focused on encouraging children to be more kind and friendly to each other.
  6. Class Size: The Lafayette School is up to 1024 students. Grade 2 class sizes have continued to increase.
  7. New Hires: David Green has been hired as a new SEI teacher in the building for grades 6 and Mr. Laskey has been hired as a new special education teacher in grade 7.
  8. Access Testing- The Lafayette School has almost completed Access Testing in grades k-8. Testing will continue this week for only the students who were absent.
  9. I-READY Testing: Students in grades k-5 have completed the reading and math I-READY testing. The results of this assessment will used to differentiate groups and develop the appropriate lessons that meet the needs of individual students.
  10. School Attendance: The Lafayette School monitors’ students’ attendance closely. School attendance this year continues to improve.
  11. Enrollment: Enrollment at the Lafayette school is at the highest it has ever been at 1,024 students.
  12. PTO Fundraising/Calendar: The PTO at Lafayette School continues to organize various fundraisers for families to participate in. A calendar with a variety of prizes for each day will be started in the month of March. The money that is collected will be spent on fieldtrips and busses.
  13. Parent Involvement: Brady and Mr. Lambresa had a well-attended Parent Breakfast on Friday, December 13th. During this event, upcoming school events were discussed, and the Title 1 staff shared family activities for parents to promote learning at home. The next parent breakfast will be on March 27th. The focus of this breakfast will be on MCAS strategies and test taking tips for parents to reinforce at home.
  14. Leadership Team: The leadership continues to meet to analyze data and develop best instructional strategies.
  15. Middle School Athletics: Try-outs for the boys and girls middle-school basketball teams is scheduled for this week.

  4. Class Size: The Lafayette School is up to 1017. Grade 2 class size has continued to increase. There is a new EL teacher for grade 6 and grade 1. The Lafayette school now has two unassigned teachers. Administration will be visiting this week to attempt to find ways to maximize space in the building for new classrooms.
  5. SEI Program, Grades 6-8: There is a new SEI program at the Lafayette school for grades 6-8. Mr. David Green has been hired as a new SEI teacher in the building for grades 6. There will be a new teacher hired in grades 7 and 8.
  6. Access Testing: The Lafayette School has started Access Testing in grades k-8. Testing will continue for the entire month of January.
  7. IREADY Testing: Students in grades k-5 have started the reading I-READY testing. The Math I-READY test will begin the end of January.
  8. At-Risk Students/Late Days: At-risk students continue to stay after school for extra help with their classroom teachers and specialists. Mr. Brady and Mr. Lambresa will be starting a daily extra help session before school with additional at-risk students.
  9. School Attendance: The Lafayette School monitors’ student’s attendance closely. At the present time, the students at the Lafayette school have the best attendance record compared to other schools in the district.
